How Does Lumecca™ IPL Therapy Work?
Lumecca™ IPL is a next-level light therapy treatment that delivers specific wavelengths of light into the skin. These rays of light interact with melanin and hemoglobin, the substances that are responsible for red and brown spots. When light is absorbed by the red and brown pigment, particles of melanin and hemoglobin scatter. The smaller particles are picked up into the lymph, where they are eventually eliminated.
What Areas of the Body can be Treated with Lumecca™ IPL?
Historically, IPL treatments have been used to address facial hyperpigmentation. As we've become more familiar with the technology and how it works, clinical teams have expanded the treatment areas for IPL to include the neck, décolletage, chest, and hands. That said, sun damage and pigment concerns are not limited to these areas, so neither is Lumecca. You may also request treatment for pigmented lesions on the arms, shoulders, head, leg, or back.
What Should I Expect after Lumecca™ IPL Treatment?
After you receive Lumecca IPL treatment, you can expect your skin to look slightly red. The pigmented spots that have been targeted during your treatment will likely get darker. It can take up to seven days for this darkening to resolve. You don't need any downtime to recover from your procedure. You can resume your normal activities. However, you will need to take extra care to protect your skin from sun exposure. Wear sunscreen and a wide-brimmed hat for at least a few weeks while your skin is a little more sensitive and prone to further sun damage. You can expect to begin seeing the improvements achieved through your Lumecca treatment one to two weeks after your appointment.
Can I Apply Makeup After My Lumecca™ IPL Treatment?
We advise against wearing makeup for at least 24 hours after your Lumecca treatment. For a short time, your skin may be red and sensitive. Until your tone, texture, and sensitivity return to normal, it's best to avoid makeup use on the treated area. That said, your skin will benefit from adequate moisturizing and sunscreen use.
How Many Lumecca™ IPL Treatments Do I Need?
We customize your treatment to your concerns, their severity, and your desired improvement. If you're using Lumecca as a preventative treatment to address the signs of sun damage or aging before they occur, you may need just one or two treatments a year. If you have existing hyperpigmentation that needs correction, you may need a series of two to three IPL treatments to fully resolve those issues. You can expect to start seeing improvement after your very first appointment.
