Botox vs. Dermal Fillers

No matter your concern, there’s probably a cosmetic injectable to address it. But how is Botox different from dermal fillers? Read on to learn more about these popular non-surgical treatment options that turn back time on your face.

Botox® treats dynamic wrinkles

There are two different types of wrinkles – static and dynamic wrinkles. Dynamic wrinkles form on the skin above a contracting muscle. These form when you make facial expressions such as smiling, frowning, squinting and laughing. Botox® works by blocking the signal from crossing the neuromuscular junction, allowing the muscle to relax and soften the wrinkles in the skin above. Botox® works best on the upper third of the face, helping to smooth out forehead lines, frown lines (the “11” lines between the eyebrows) and crow’s feet (wrinkles around the eyes). Botox® takes full effect after a few days and last for about four months. To maintain and prolong the results of this temporary treatment, you will need to return for more injections.

Dermal fillers treat static wrinkles

The other type of wrinkle is called a static wrinkle, which is one that is visible on the skin at all times. Examples include the lines at the corners of the mouth, across the cheeks and along the neck. Dermal fillers are designed to treat static wrinkles, something that Botox® isn’t effective at doing. Juvederm® is a popular dermal filler made of hyaluronic acid, which is a naturally occurring substance in the body that binds with water molecules, smoothing wrinkles and folds for anywhere from six months to a year. Radiesse is another dermal filler made of calcium-based microspheres and gel. It not only targets moderate to severe wrinkles and folds, but it stimulates the body to produce collagen for longer-lasting results. Similar to Botox®, the results from dermal fillers are temporary, and you will return for additional injections to maintain results.

Botox® and dermal fillers can be used separately and together to address all types of wrinkles on your skin and help you achieve a youthful appearance.
